Cupping coffee is a serious formality for many roasting businesses to determine the quality of new beans. And while it probably still is for Black Market Roasters, their decision to put an entertaining twist on it was enjoyed by all. An open event at their Enmore espresso bar saw the crowd split into two teams, with each blind tasting all five of Black Market's new single origin coffees (as brewed in a French Press). Both teams had a set amount of cards portraying pictures of flavour notes which then had to be matched to the coffees. After much discussion, the 'official' flavours were revealed and the team with the most matches was declared the winner (this team happened to include yours truly, albeit many flavour suggestions were out). Prior to this bit of fun, the BMR house blend was split up into each of it's components (an Ethiopian Sidamo natural, a Papua New Guinea and a Colombian) and these were cupped individually. Black Market hosts coffee events relatively frequently, so to find out more keep an eye out on their instagram @blackmarketroasters.
