From the guys that have been delivering fantastic coffee since 2011 in Surry Hills comes this new roastery cafe, located on Mary St in St Peters. While the focus remains on delivering a great cup of coffee, a larger space means there are food options on the menu, encouraging customers to 'have here' rather than 'take away'. The main section of the cafe revolves around a square bar, where the barista can serve coffee to patrons seated around it. Tables behind the bar and in the room next door mean accommodating a large amount of people is no issue.
Design touches are simple yet classy; solid barstools reside up against the bar which exudes quality, as do the rest of the wooden touches throughout. Plain white walls on all sides show off large artworks by Wendy Loefler, a Sydney based artist who depicts large natural landscapes using charcoal and pastel as her medium. A solid selection of take-home coffee roasted by Sample and various coffee brewing gear adorns shelves on either side of the cafe, and a bit of greenery adds colour and life. High ceilings add further to the feeling of a large area.
Coffee is, as you would probably suspect, nothing short of brilliant. Any doubt of this is quenched by a 3rd place Australian Brewer's Cup trophy on the shelf, earned by resident barista Toby Wilson. We had a Colombian La Siberia on espresso, and a washed Kenyan Kiangoi AA V60 pourover. Both were exceptionally well balanced; the espresso was fairly light but sweet and juicy, and the pourover had delicious berry notes from start to finish.
Sample Coffee also has an awesome online Brew Crew initiative, encouraging customers to subscribe to a coffee supply and give feedback on their process and results. This allows people brewing the same coffees to come together to inspire and learn from each other, and perhaps try a thing or two differently.
If you've been a fan of what Sample has delivered in the past, you've got no excuse not to go along and be impressed at this new site.
