Summer Hill is a rather quiet suburb with a great village feel, just south of Parramatta Rd, and about a 10-15 minute commute from Sydney's CBD. Perked across the road from the train station is the understated cafe that is Heritage Coffee Brewers. The brainchild of two heavily experienced baristas/roasters, Heritage has been open since Australia Day this year, without a doubt much to the pleasure of people in the area.
Everything inside the cafe gives off a feeling of solidity; heavy wooden tables are spread throughout the narrow space and a freestanding stone coffee bar where quality brews are dished out. Behind the counter, a collection of coffee bags from different roasters sits like sporitng memorabilia in an appreciation of good coffee. Heritage rotates through guest roasters, picking the cream of the crop from various specialty coffee heavyweights. Part owner Andrew Carter used to work with James Gourmet Coffee in England, and we were delighted to discover the quality of brews from this international roaster.
We ordered two coffees both from James Gourmet Coffee. A v60 pourover on a Colombian Finca Merlin, a washed process which was complex with juicy stonefruits, as well as espressos on an El Salvador La Reforma & El Cerro washed process, with notes of dark choc, popcorn and gooseberries. The filter developed really well as it cooled whereas the espressos were bright and juicy from the get go.
We'll definitely be back to have a sip of future guest roasters from these guys, and we highly recommend you do as well.
