Day Two of The Coffee Experience down at Sydney's Royal Hall of Industries shaped up to be even more action packed than yesterday with the NSW/ACT Latte Art, Cup Tasters, and our personal favourite, the Brewers Cup competition. On top of the busy competition schedule, we managed to take some time to enjoy several delicious coffees, including the Colombian Sudan Rume, the coffee used by 2015 World Barista Champion Sasa Sestic. Located at the Ona stand at the back of the venue, only a limited amount was available for the morning. Using an innovative processing technique known as carbon maceration, the result is a truly unique coffee with tasting notes of brown sugar and christmas cake, along with an explosive mouthfeel up front.
The Brewer's Cup competition saw a record amount of competitors this year, with the eventual winner being Simon Jaramillo from Reformatory Caffeine Lab. Simon used a Panama Gesha varietal, the Craig Simon Maker Series. This coffee was grown on the Ninety Plus gesha estates at an elevation of 1600-1800m, and is a hybrid processed coffee which included being left in a river for 48 hours. Only 10.5 kilograms was avaliable of this coffee, with Craig Simon from Think Tank Coffee having developed this profile over several years. "I've been working with him (Craig) for the last year and a half" Simon says, and for anyone looking to try this brew, Reformatory will be serving it at their brew bar tomorrow.
Hugh Kelly from Ona Coffee in Canberra walked away with the NSW/ACT Barista Championship title, with Jess Nicol from Black Market Coffee taking out the NSW/ACT Cup Tasters title. The top three from each competition will head to Melbourne next March to fight for the Australian titles, where the winner will go up against the worlds best coffee professionals in a chance to claim the world title.
Tomorrow wraps up the 2015 event with the finals of the Coffee Chain Championships, and the last opportunity to experience some of the incredible coffees on offer at the various stalls. For the home brewers out there, all your essential equipment is selling for great prices at stalls such as Bombora Coffee Supplies and Eureka. Make sure to call past the Zest setup, whose copper brew setup you may have seen on our Instagram.
